Entry to the International Autonomous Robot Racing Competition

Background

Every year our team competes at International Autonomous Robot Racing Competition LINK! in Waterloo. It's an exciting opportunity to work on robotics in a competitive environment.

My incredible team held down the fort and together we able to implement most of the planned features, including a Machine Learning based traffic light detection, a simulation of our robot and algorithm to remove shadows from camera images. I served as the software lead of the amazing team pictured below. I led the team remotely so unfortunately I could not physically attend the competition. A more detailed detailed description of our planned design is in the document below.

Results

Although we did not place in the top 3 teams we're very proud of what we were able to achieve. We placed 4th out of 12 competing teams from all over the world. Footage from one of our races is given below. Special thanks to Jack Xu, Matthew Post, Angela Gu, Brian Kibazohi, Brian Tran, Yun-Ha Jung, Adrian Malanaran, Waleed Ahmed Andrew Jin and Tsugumi Murata for their amazing work. Our teams code can be found here on Github.
